Planned Parenthood has known to be a sensitive topic of discussion for the general public. A question to ask, is why? Before properly answering this question, one must be fully informed of the issue. Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit organization that does research and provides advice on contraception, family planning, and reproductive issues. This means Planned Parenthood provides health care to all genders who have poor health care and/or income. Politicians such as Mike Pence want to shut down Planned Parenthood due to his anti-abortion views, he even went as far as to try and redefine “rape” in a bill in order to limit access to abortions. Although the pro-life topic is another discussion, it is vital to know the history of the opposing parties view. Although Planned Parenthood is well-known for abortions, Planned Parenthood provides STD/STI screenings and treatment, cancer screenings and more for both men and women.
Planned Parenthood began in 1916 when activist Margaret Sanger, her sister Ethel Byrne and Fania Mindell opened up the first birth control clinic in Brownsville. The three-provided birth control as well as advice for the women up and down their block. The police raided their clinic shutting them down and had the three charged with providing birth control. Sanger refused to the pay fine and spent 30 days in prison where she continued to share information on birth control within the prison. Through years of triumph and tragedy, Planned Parenthood has always fought for the safety of women’s health and later for men as well.
Circling back to the reputation conservatives have given Planned Parenthood, it is widely incorrect to use the argument many of the general public say such as, “all they do is give abortions, when the women can give the child up for adoption” for many reasons. Reasons being that, for one, Planned Parenthood only spends 3% of profit on their abortion services, with the information found directly on their website. The highest percent rate is 41% used for STD/STI screenings and preventions- helping both men and women in need. Another reason that the adoption argument is invalid would be the over flow in children’s orphanages. An article written by Kester Kenn Klomegah provides information of about 700,000 children up for adoption in Russia but are denied due to the high rate of child trafficking. A general observation would be that if a woman decided to give up her or child for adoption, it would be clear that this is not the “better choice for the child” as so many use in their arguments. Defunding Planned Parenthood should be eradicated due to its wide variety of health care opportunities.
Furthermore, defunding Planned Parenthood should be eradicated because - if it were defunded, how would those who benefit and rely on Planned Parenthood survive? One realizes it is important to have proper health care, but not everyone has access to fund and/or get a career that provides it. One would believe that the United States of America would stand together in means of trouble, this does not exclude trouble within our own borders. It is vital to stand together, and protect each citizen from all means of harm-including getting the supportive and proper health care that Planned Parenthood provides.
In order to have a fully informed opinion on the defunding of Planned Parenthood, it is necessary to heat the opposing views. Dailywire.com provides an article titled “5 Reasons Planned Parenthood should be defunded ASAP”, which provides a list with five reasons why the opponents believe Planned Parenthood should be defunded. One of the listed arguments was that Planned Parenthood is an obvious arm of the Democrat Party. Whether or not this is a valid fact, the standing political views should be irrelevant when providing proper health care for all. With this reasoning, it would appear to make an invalid argument as Planned Parenthood provides health services to all genders regardless of their political stands. That being said, the opponents of Planned Parenthood should keep political views to the side and focus on the main task at hand which is providing health care to those with lower incomes. Another reason stated was titled, “an abortion mill that takes cover by throwing around condoms once and awhile”. I find that the title of this reason alone is enough to show how invalid this argument is due to the amount of biased input it carries. While researching why Planned Parenthood should be defunded, one will find numerous biased arguments with little to no factual evidence.
Developing a more informative opinion on Planned Parenthood and their services, it becomes quite clear just how Planned Parenthood cares for the general public and is willing to fight hard for the public. The opponents of Planned Parenthood produce anti-abortion advertisements linking it directly to Planned Parenthood, even though there are other clinics not related to PP who also provide abortions. Within these advertisements, multiple propaganda techniques are used in order to persuade the audience. Propaganda techniques can be used for both negative and positive qualities. An example of negative propaganda technique is known as “name calling” found an article written by Donna Woolfolk Cross. “Name calling” is a propaganda term used to make the opposing view catch a negative image. Many anti-Planned Parenthood advertisements’ use this term in order to broaden the negative connotation Planned Parenthood has caught.
Another negative use of propaganda techniques is the use of “guilt or glory by association” also found in Cross’s article. This device is self-explanatory, meaning the use of this device links either guilt or glory by association with the desired product at hand. Many anti-Planned Parenthood ads use this device in order to link guilt with having an abortion or going to Planned Parenthood. An example of a positive propaganda ad used in Planned Parenthood advertisements is the “plain folk appeal” found in Cross’s article. “Plain folk appeal” the device where the characters in a certain ad or commercial are the general public rather than having a celebrity or activist speaking on the subject. This device allows the audience to connect on a deeper level to the ad as they can see that a certain issue or product applies to them. Planned Parenthood uses the “plain folk appeal” device in order to show their audience that they are not alone, and that accidents such as catching an STD or getting pregnant happens to people and not just celebrities or in movies. The constant battle between Planned Parenthood and their opposing viewers has only worsened with the use of propaganda techniques.
Thus, finishing the views of the opposing side to Planned Parenthood, one will notice in many to most of the protesters signs when flagging down women entering the clinic will be painted with religious views. Many of the protesters argue that abortion is murder, in all cases. Regardless of taking the time to do the simple Google search it took to find the information that Planned Parenthood only spends 3% of their profit on abortions, protestors continue to riot outside of the building- yelling at and mocking innocent patients of the clinic. Planned Parenthood is in no way affiliated with any religion and provides health care to all. Although everyone carries their own perceptions and religious views, it would be of a warm heart to not spread hatred. Even women will protest hatred at other women, which is not unity. Defunding Planned Parenthood will not help these women or men that are patients become religious, and yelling at them while entering a clinic comes off to the third party’s eyes as non-religious.
For many women, Planned Parenthood is the only means of getting healthcare. An article posted on www.istandwithpp.org reads that more than 20% of the counties where Planned Parenthood health centers operate, there are no other health care providers who serve patients who rely on safety-net providers. Planned Parenthood has provided birth control to over two million people as well as over four million STD treatments and tests every year. If Planned Parenthood were to shut down, those patients – if able to afford it would need to be transferred to other clinics, and there are simply not enough health care providers to take on that role. Many believe nothing huge would happen if Planned Parenthood were to be shut down, but around 2.5 million people would lose access to health care if it were shut down.
With all of the misconduct in our society, Planned Parenthood is one of the few remaining businesses that care for the general public, and not just the one percenters. It is not on every job requirement to provide health benefits and with the rise of unemployment, one would assume that now knowing all the facts of Planned Parenthood that it needs to stay open and funded in order to help those people. Planned Parenthood may not affect every single person, but by supporting and helping fund it with our tax payer money gives back to the community piece by piece. One may realize that our tax payer money may go to outrageous expenses, but Planned Parenthood is not one of them. Defunding a means of health care can only hurt our fellow citizens both health wise and traumatically. For women who have no other option, they may be forced to go through a labor they did not want or suffer through an illness they may not know of.
Not only has Planned Parenthood helped teenagers outside of school, it is also helping them on the inside. Plannedparenthood.org shows statistics of the females in local communities living around a Planned Parenthood has a lower rate of high school drop-outs. Planned Parenthood has provided the tools that women need in order to make wiser and more informed decisions on their future.
In conclusion, Planned Parenthood needs to stay open and funded in order to give back to our community. With all of our tax paying money going out the door yearly, the most sensible opportunity would be to give back within our own borders by providing this source of health care. While other countries have access to free health care, millions of American men and women are fighting for the basic health care that should be a necessity for all. Planned Parenthood provides the necessary means to provide a wide variety of health care for all in need. Defunding Planned Parenthood will only set us as a whole back in history.
