In business and in life it’s best to always be transparent. If you are honest and truthful and try to create value for your client then they will see that. That helps them feel more comfortable with you and justifies you charging a reasonable fee for your services.
Transparency in Bad Situations
In a bad situation, many people feel like they need to lie or cover up the truth to protect their image. Everybody makes mistakes, people need to understand that nobody is perfect. The difference is how people handle their mistakes. You could lie or make up an excuse but you don’t want to live a double life where you tell your clients something different from what you really do or think. It’s always best to be forthcoming about any situation involving your clients’ situation, they will understand and appreciate your honesty even if they are mad at first. It’s always better to be respected than to be caught in a lie covering up your perfect record.
Transparency in Good Situations
In a good situation, you can improve a client or peer’s perception of you be being as open as possible. Describe the whole situation and all the variables and all the possible solutions. You can create value by helping everybody understand the situation that you are analyzing and solving, so that they better understand your purpose and importance. Your goal should be to help your customer learn and grow, don’t just do you work as quick as possible and be done.
Trustworthiness Leads to Relationships
When we conduct business it’s person to person, and we all have similar instincts and feelings. Whether it’s a first impression or our minds trying to prove or disprove our first impressions we are always judging and comparing character and personality. If you trust somebody as a friend you are more likely to trust them with your business or money. Transparency will always lead to more recommendations and referrals than being sneaky or shady.
It may not always be what you want to do, but it is always better to be open and honest in business. Always err on the side of transparency and be upfront with your peers and clients, no matter the situation. If you use honesty to your advantage it will improve not only your network but also your revenue and profit.
